A Day in the Life: Living Outside the Box

What student life at MUWCI looks like when learning, friendships, community, and everyday experiences all come together.

A Day in the Life: Living Outside the Box

In my Google Calendar, you’ll find three distinct colours: one for academic classes, one for time with friends, and a third with the curious label: “Out – In School.”

What does that even mean?

At MUWCI, the boundary between "schoolwork" and social life is delightfully blurred. Living in a UWC community means education isn't confined to textbooks, classrooms, or scheduled assignments. It happens during lively cafeteria debates, late-night discussions in the common room, or unexpected life lessons shared over a warm cup of chai.

Beyond the Classroom

Whether it’s during weekend blocks, post-class hours, or breaks throughout the day, learning takes on a life of its own through:

  • Global Affairs forums

  • MUWCI Core modules

  • Student-led workshops and presentations

Here, “thinking outside the box” isn’t a cliché—it’s our everyday reality. We constantly ask ourselves: What is the box made of? Why does it have this shape? Who gets to decide where its borders are?

Perspective in the Valley

This integration shows up in quiet, meaningful ways. Cooking a meal with friends becomes an exercise in gratitude. When the power flickers for a few seconds before switching back on, it serves as a gentle reminder of our privilege—knowing that for many in the surrounding valley, the lights don't always turn back on so quickly. These moments quietly teach us to see our comfort through a different lens and stay grounded in the realities beyond campus.

Community, Joy, and Balance

Living in an environment where academic, personal, and social lives overlap can feel intense. Yet, it prepares us for a complex world where the personal, political, and academic are naturally intertwined.

To balance the intensity, MUWCI offers endless ways to recharge, celebrate, and build lifelong bonds:

  • Dancing together during Ganesh celebrations

  • Smearing mud on friends during traditional Mud Games

  • Overnight hikes under the stars

The MUWCI Integration

So, maybe my calendar had it right all along. “Out – In School” doesn’t mean chaos—it means complete integration. At MUWCI, the walls of the box are thinner and more flexible, giving us the space not just to think outside the box, but to live outside it.
