About MUWCI

Our Story

“To offer students a unique, unparalleled, and transformative college experience.”

When UWC Mahindra (MUWCI) was founded in Mulshi, Maharashtra, in 1997, it was a first-of-its-kind experiment: India's only UWC pre-university college. That November, 91 students arrived from all corners of the globe to a bare hillside with far more vision than infrastructure, tasked with building a community from scratch. Almost thirty years on, that empty hill has been transformed into a thriving biodiversity reserve. Today, it stands as a living legacy—where every single tree was hand-planted by a student or teacher who once called this place home.

Mission and Vision

MUWCI is one of 18 United World Colleges worldwide. Every UWC shares the same mission. What differs is how each college lives it out, shaped by its location, its community, and the particular moment in history it inhabits.

As India's only UWC college, MUWCI occupies a specific position within this global movement. It sits at the intersection of one of the world's most diverse nations and an international student community that arrives from over 70 countries. The work of peace and sustainability here is not abstract. It happens in a classroom where students from formerly divided nations are doing coursework together, on a service trip where a student from a wealthy European city is working alongside a rural community in Bihar, and in the daily act of living with people whose lives are entirely unlike yours.

The UWC Movement

The United World Colleges (UWC) is a global movement withof 18 schools and colleges on four continents. Founded in 1962, it is built on a single idea: that bringing young people from different nations together, before the world has had the chance to divide them, is one of the most effective things education can do. MUWCI is one of those 18 colleges, and the only one in India.

Campus

A school on a hill.

The MUWCI campus was designed by the award-winning architect Christopher Benninger, who drew on traditional Indian architectural forms. Wadas, staggered steps, courtyards, and lotus ponds shape the layout. There are no enclosed corridors separating academic and residential life. You move between classrooms, the library, the cafeteria, and student residences entirely in the open.

That openness is not incidental. It means the campus functions as a continuous community where learning and daily life happen in the same space. Local wildlife—including reptiles, birds, insects, frogs, squirrels, peacocks, macaques, langurs, and several dozen butterfly species—is part of the everyday landscape.

Impact

UWC Mahindra is built on the idea that education across difference produces people who act differently in the world. The impact of that education shows up in several ways: in the students who receive scholarships to attend, in the communities surrounding the campus, and in what graduates go on to do.
